The large river, Fossá, which flows beneath the bridge in the fjord, was the starting point of it all. Over 100 years ago, visionary Ólavur á Heygum built a water turbine here that turned water power into electricity.

The river’s water powered a mill, and the mill’s energy was transformed into electricity.

The location was so well chosen that Fossáverkið (the Fossá Power Plant) has been reliably supplying electricity ever since. Today, water is sourced from reservoirs in the hills, directed straight into the power plant through pipelines.

The energy produced for all of us is as pure as the water flowing in the river.
