In Vestmanna, They Honor Pioneers
If you arrive in Vestmanna via the lower road, you will see it—just west of Fossá, the people of Vestmanna have erected a dignified monument to a man who saw the light long before others did.
Ólavur á Heygum was a farmer, businessman, and politician, and he led the first attempt in the Faroe Islands to generate electricity from water.
But that was not all—Ólavur also played a key role in securing telephone connections for the Faroese people.
The first telephone line in the Faroe Islands was established in 1905, connecting Tórshavn and Vestmanna.
The statue was created by the renowned artist Hans Pauli Olsen.
